In short

An outpost at the edge of the ice

Antarctica is often imagined as uninterrupted white. Whichaway sits in a different landscape: exposed rock, freshwater lakes and nearby glacial ice. The unusual stay begins with that contrast, before you step into a heated pod.

A closer look

01 / The story

An oasis in the ice

White Desert’s location fact sheet places Whichaway in the Schirmacher Oasis in Queen Maud Land. It describes freshwater lakes and an icefall around the camp. Here, “oasis” means an ice-free landscape, not a warm one. The exposed ground makes a small base possible in an environment where the broader ice landscape still determines the scale of the journey.[2]

02 / The story

A name from finding the way

The operator tells a modest origin story for the name: its founder became a little lost crossing the landscape and wondered which way to go. Its current account dates the camp’s opening to 2005 and says it occupies the site of a former East German science base. That gives the place a history of human presence alongside the feeling of remoteness.[1]

03 / The story

Shelter inside an expedition

The camp’s heated pods and communal spaces provide the overnight base. The 2023 fact sheet describes access by flight from Cape Town, while the current camp page presents Whichaway within White Desert’s Antarctic journeys. This is an expedition arrangement, with travel and weather planning around the stay. Its appeal is the possibility of spending time within that landscape, rather than treating the pod as an ordinary hotel room in an extraordinary postcode.[2][1]
